ABU DHABI, 9th October, 2016 (WAM)–H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has congratulated Antonio Guterres, former Portuguese Prime Minister, on his recent acclamation by the members of the Security Council to be the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In a letter addressed to Guterres, who served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 2005-2015, he said, “All our countries are currently undergoing a period of significant transformation that requires a prudent and conscious leadership with sincere commitment to finding common solutions.”

He noted that the vast experience of Guterres, deep knowledge and his future vision for the United Nations will be of a great value for the organiation and member states alike.

Sheikh Abdullah expressed the UAE’s pride for joining the United Nations in 1971, in the same week that saw the declaration of the Union. “The UAE values are always consistent with the United Nations charter,” he added.

He also expressed his confidence that the UN under the leadership of Guterres would be able to renew its capacity to address and resolve complex problems that await the international community.

“The current geopolitical landscape with associating challenges facing our region in particular, calls for multilateral organisations that function effectively to produce effective political solutions more than ever before,” the UAE foreign minister said.

He concluded that the UAE is ready to support efforts to expand and revitalise the United Nations, reiterating the strong partnership that links the UAE with the United Nations.
