NEW YORK,- Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, joined world leaders in New York last week to attend the 71st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
As part of the UAE delegation, Dr. Al Zeyoudi met with high-level officials and led the country's engagement on global climate and environmental issues.
Most notably, the UAE confirmed its support for climate action and submitted the country's instrument of ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement.
"The UAE is eager to move forward in implementing the Paris Climate Agreement on a global scale," Dr. Al Zeyoudi said. "It's imperative that we engage business, youth and academia to ensure we achieve the most successful outcomes possible."
During UNGA, Dr. Al Zeyoudi led the UAE in several engagements to promote global sustainability, including a public lecture at the New York University Guarini Center on Environment, Energy and Land Use Law, where he offered perspectives on the UAE's approach to climate action.
Dr. Al Zeyoudi also reflected on the UAE's contributions to the development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a panel discussion at the International Peace Institute. His remarks focused specifically on how businesses play a critical role in achieving SDGs by 2030.
Throughout the week, Dr. Al Zeyoudi met with a number of high-level officials to discuss areas of cooperation, including Salaheddine Mezouar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Morocco, Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change for Canada, Hakima El Haite, Minister of Environment, Morocco, Nick Hurd, UK Minister of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Peter Thomson, President of the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Jose Graziano da Silva, Director General of Food and Agriculture Authority, and Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and former Mayor of New York.
The UAE delegation also participated in the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) to discuss next steps on the climate agreement and expectations for the 22nd session of the Conference of Parties (COP22) to the UNFCCC, taking place in Marrakesh, Morocco in November 2016.
