Arab League Council to hold emergency meeting to discuss situation in Aleppo

CAIRO, 1st May, 2016 (WAM) -- The General Secretariat of the Arab League has decided to hold an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent delegates on Wednesday, at the request of the State of Qatar, to discuss the dangerous escalation of the situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

According to the Qatar News Agency, QNA, the Arab League, in a memorandum, has announced that the agreement on holding the meeting was decided after consultations and contacts made by the General Secretariat and the Kingdom of Bahrain, the current president of the Arab League Council, received the approval of two states to hold the meeting, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, as stipulated in the rules of procedure of the Arab League in such cases.

In a note sent to the General Secretariat of the Arab League earlier in the day, the State of Qatar requested the holding of an emergency meeting to discuss the deteriorating situation in Aleppo which has caused the deaths and wounding of hundreds of civilians as a result of continuous shelling by Syrian regime forces on the city.
