VIENNA, 24th April, 2016 (WAM) — Austrian voters began casting their ballots today in the first round of presidential elections in the country.

The current President Heinz Fischer’s term will end in July, following 12 years in power.

Although the presidency in Austria is considered a largely ceremonial position, the president’s duties include appointing a chancellor and government. It is not expected for any one of the candidates to gain a majority win in the first round, and a run-off will be held next month.
