Security Council passes resolution demanding ‘an immediate ceasefire’ in Gaza during Ramadan


NEW YORK: The UN Security Council on Monday passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan, the immediate and unconditional release of hostages and “the urgent need to expand the flow” of aid into Gaza.

In the substantive vote, there were 14 in favour, with the US abstaining, according to UN News

The Council would demand ‘an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire’ It would also demand ‘the immediate and unconditional” release of all hostages.

Other provisions would have the Council emphasise ‘the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip.

In this regard, the move would have the Council reiterate its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale, in line with international humanitarian law as well as resolutions 2712 (2023) and 2720 (2023).

UNICEF signs with the Ministry of Interior its plan to strengthen the child-friendly justice system in Libya

Tripoli: UNICEF Libya signed with the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity its operational plan for 2024 to strengthen the child-friendly justice system in Libya.

The organization said in a publication on Monday that the aim of the partnership is to strengthen the juvenile criminal system by building the capabilities of the staff of the Family and Child Protection Units and developing standard operating procedures for children under the jurisdiction of the law.

Tripoli: The Libyan Authority to Support the Palestinian People announced that it has begun shipping goods to the ship heading to Gaza from the port of Misrata to the port of Al-Arish.

The Authority explained that in response to the religious and humanitarian duty and in response to the distress calls of our people in Gaza who are subjected to a war of genocide, the Libyans are racing to contribute to the Libyan aid campaign for Gaza, which is represented in medicines, tents, blankets, winter clothes, and food supplies.

The Defense and Security Council discusses the military and security situation in the Western and Mountain regions.

Tripoli: The Defense and Security Council, headed by the two representatives of the Presidential Council, ‘Musa Al-Koni’ and ‘Abdullah Al-Lafi,’ discussed yesterday, Sunday, the military and security situation in the Western and Mountain regions.

The Presidential Council’s Information and Communication Office said that the meeting included the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, the Minister of Defense, Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant-General Muhammad Al-Haddad, the Assistant Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, and the head of the General Intelligence Service, Lieutenant-General Hussein al-A’ib. The head of the Internal Security Service, ‘Lotfi Al-Harari,’ and the designated Minister of the Interior, ‘Imad Trabelsi.’

He explained that the meeting was devoted to reviewing the security and military situation in all regions, and the steps taken to establish security there by assigning the Chief of Staff to form a force from some military
units to support the security services in carrying out the tasks assigned to them.

An international report reveals the extent of the disastrous effects caused by Storm Daniel on the regions of eastern Libya.

Tripoli: A report issued by the World Bank, the United Nations, and the European Union revealed the catastrophic effects caused by Storm Daniel, which struck the regions of eastern Libya last September.

The report, which was issued on the occasion of about 6 months since the disaster, said that Storm ‘Daniel’ left dire effects affecting approximately 1.5 million people. This is equivalent to 22% of the Libyan population.

The report explained that the recovery and reconstruction needs in the wake of the catastrophic floods resulting from the storm are estimated at approximately $1.8 billion, and that the housing sector was the most affected, as an estimated more than 18.5 thousand housing units were destroyed or damaged, which is equivalent to 7% of the total residential units in Libya.
