ISTANBUL, 12th January, 2016 (WAM) — An explosion in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet tourist district on Tuesday morning wounded several people, according to police sources.

It was not immediately clear exactly where the explosion at 10.20 a.m. local time (08:20GMT) happened or how many were wounded, the Turkish news agency, Anadolu, has reported.

The area, on the European side of Istanbul, is home to the city’s most popular tourist sites, including the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya, and contains hundreds of hotels and restaurants.

Security forces and medics have been dispatched to the area.
