ABU DHABI, 30th January, 2017 (WAM) — A delegation from the Federal National Council’s Parliamentary Division is taking part in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, to be held on 30-31 January 2017 in New York.

The Parliamentary Division’s participation comes as part of the activities undertaken by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Forum of Young Parliamentarians (FYP).

The delegation includes Saeed Saleh Al Rumaithi, Member of the Federal National Council and Head of the FYP.

The council will discuss, over two days, gender equality, women and girls’ empowerment, and the challenges and obstacles faced by women in various sectors.

Al Rumaithi will also participate in a panel discussion on the sidelines of the conference on ways to implement and fund youth development programmes.

The Forum of Young Parliamentarians was founded as part of the IPU meetings in 2013 and strives to empower the young people in parliamentary events.

The young parliamentarians have brought to the fore several issues such as reducing the minimum age for voting and election participation, allocating adequate resources from the national budget to youth programmes, training and education of youth, integrating their expectations in the national budget plans and including political education programmes in the curricula to establish the foundations of democracy.
