ABU DHABI, Experts at the Global Space Congress, which opened here on Tuesday discussed the latest technologies in space exploration and ways to strengthen international efforts to develop this vital sector.
The International Astronautical Federation also revealed plans to establish an international innovation agenda in the field of astronautics, in a bid to keep up with current challenges in the space sector.
The Congress further offered a platform to strengthen international efforts and forge partnerships to develop the space sector, experts told the UAE News Agency (WAM), stressing that innovation in the field of space would make both explorations and the development of space more cost effective.
Dr. Khalifa Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the UAE Space Agency, said that the space sector was vital to the nation's development, along with its efforts to achieve sustainable economic development through its space industry.
The country has released a national policy on the space sector, to guarantee positive results in its short and long term goals, he added.
The UAE counts on its space sector to be a key factor in the development of its scientific and technological abilities, which will ensure its place among the world's advanced countries, Al Rumaithi noted.
The development and issuance of legal frameworks and regulations that organise the space sector in the UAE are in line with the policy of comprehensive and consistent strategies, as set t in the National Agenda of UAE Vision 2021, and the higher policy for science, technology and innovation, as well as Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, he explained.
Prince Dr. Turki Bin Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Saud, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), referred to the accomplishments of the city in the space sector.
"We, in Saudi Arabia, have launched 13 satellites and are preparing to launch more in the next three years," he said.
He confirmed that KACST has taken on the role of a space agency in Saudi Arabia, as it has been conducting many activities related to the space sector for more than 17 years, especially in the development of satellites.
The Congress aims to support the region's ongoing space projects and initiatives. It also aims to establish the region as a central contributor to the global industry of space exploration through its support for pioneering projects, space education and research, commercial space applications and scientific and commercial missions.
