Helicopter pilot critically injured in Antarctic

CANBERRA, 12th January, 2016 (WAM) -- Officials say a helicopter pilot is in a critical condition at an Australian Antarctic base after falling into a crevasse, AP reported.

The Australian Antarctic Division said in a statement on Tuesday that the pilot fell 20 meters (66 feet) into the crevasse after landing on a remote ice shelf 104 miles (167 kilometers) northeast of Australia's Davis Station late Monday.

A three-member rescue team from Davis was able to retrieve the pilot who was then flown by helicopter to a medical facility at Davis where his condition remained critical.
