WELLINGTON, 1st September 2016 (WAM) — A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck early Friday off the coast of New Zealand, the US Geological Survey said.

The powerful quake, centred 30 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, struck 169 kilometres northeast of Gisborne, on the east cape of New Zealand’s North Island, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
