Mohamed bin Zayed’s visit to Vatican supports peace, tolerance: Grand Imam of al-Azhar

CAIRO --- The meeting between His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, consolidates efforts being made to promote tolerance as well as joint action to achieve peace for humanity, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, said on Thursday.

In comments on al-Azhar's official account on the microblogging site, Twitter, he said, "Joint efforts to achieve rapprochement between the East and the West must be intensified in order to build bridges for understanding to contribute to the achievement of just global peace which we all aspire to."

Al-Tayeb further expressed appreciation of the meeting which, he said, would support al-Azhar's efforts in establishing dialogue on the foundations of mutual respect, acceptance of others, co-existence and the promotion of peace across the world, driven in particular by Pope Francis' vision which looks at Islam in a fair way.
