Structured sport competition for the Filipino community
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, April 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — As part of MoneyGram’s ongoing commitment to the Filipino community and its customers living in Saudi Arabia, the company recently launched its first Volleyball Championship. This initiative is more than just a sport competition; it is a unique event with concerts, face painting, games and much more entertainment for entire families.
“At MoneyGram we believe that sport is the best way to make new friends and ease home sickness while away from family and friends. It’s not a surprise that volleyball is one of Filipinos’ favorite sports. That’s why we keep engaging in volleyball-related events – last year MoneyGram sponsored men’s and women’s tournaments and this year we decided to take this activity to another level and launch our own competition,” said Andrei Afanasyev, MoneyGram’s marketing lead for Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Eight top performing men’s and women’s teams have been selected to take part in the MoneyGram Volleyball Championship and stand a chance to win a total award of SAR 7,000 cash and a trophy. The competition kicked off on March 31 and will last until April 28 with four exciting matches to be played each Friday from 4.00 PM to 10.00 PM at the Kingdom Hospital.
According to World Bank data, Saudi Arabia hosts the largest community of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the Middle East. 670,000 Filipinos make up the fourth-largest group of foreigners in Saudi Arabia. In 2015 they sent back home $3.2 billion in remittances.
