JEDDAH, 1st September, 2016 (WAM)— The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has expressed grave concern at the eruption of violence in Gabon following the official announcement on Wednesday of the results of the presidential election, held throughout the country on 27th August 2016.

In a statement, Secretary-General of the OIC, Iyad Madani, appealed for calm and called on all stakeholders to apply maximum restraint, refrain from the use of violence and an escalation of the situation which could endanger the rule of law and put Gabonese democracy at risk.

He urged any aggrieved party to resort only to legal and constitutional means to seek redress.

He further reminded both the opposition and the government to protect the vital interests of their country and avoid creating any unnecessary political stalemate which would undermine the unity, peace and stability that Gabon has enjoyed over several decades.
