JEDDAH, 31st May, 2016 (WAM) — The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the deadly attack on 29 May 2016, on a convoy of UN peace keepers in the central Mopti region of Mali resulting in the death of five members of the Togolese contingent and the injuring of one other.

The Secretary General, Iyad Ameen Madani in denouncing the assault on the MINUSMA peace keepers as reprehensible, paid tribute to the soldiers of peace for their enormous sacrifices.

He blamed the enemies of peace and progress for the continuing attacks targeting peace keepers who strive under difficult conditions to actively support the implementation of the Algiers Peace Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali.

Madani appealed to all Malians, especially the parties signatories to the accord, to further intensify efforts for the restoration of durable peace and stability as a way of exposing the saboteurs of the peace process. He also called for the perpetrators of this heinous act to be identified and brought to justice.

The Secretary General conveyed his sincere condolences to the governments of Mali and Togo as well as the families of the victims and reiterated the determination of the OIC to continue to contribute to the return of durable peace and sustainable development to the regions of north Mali.
