NEW YORK, 12th October, 2016 (WAM) — The State of Qatar has reiterated the importance of exercising universal jurisdiction in accordance with agreed mechanisms, and within the framework of international cooperation.

The Qatar News Agency, QNA, quoted a member of Qatar’s delegation participating in the recent UNGA 71st session, Asmaa Juma Al Sulaiti, as stressing the importance of taking into account the balance between the gradual development of the principle of universal jurisdiction and respect for the principle of fairness and the principles contained in the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, and other provisions of international law.

Addressing the 6th Committee of the UN General Assembly, Al Sulaiti highlighted Qatar’s attention to universal jurisdiction based on its well-known support of the international community’s efforts, and cooperation among nations, to counter international crimes and serious violations of human rights.
