BRAZZAVILLE, 24th March, 2016 (WAM) — Congolese President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, who has ruled the country for 32 years, was re-elected today for a new five-year term.

“He won the presidential elections in the first round with 60% of the vote,” said the Interior Minister, Raymond Zephirin, while announcing the results on Thursday.

The elections were held last Sunday amid a tense atmosphere after the announcement of a total communications blackout for two days to prevent the “illegal publication” of election results by the opposition.
