ABU DHABI, H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, has called upon all members of society to contribute to the success of the campaign entitled, " Your body is your responsibility", organised by the National and Reserve Service Authority receives of the UAE Armed Forces.
H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak said the campaign is the first of its kind, seeking to raise medical awareness among the public throughout the year, and is being supported by the World Health Organisation.
''Diseases are harming members of the public and must be fought through increased medical knowledge, and by changing poor eating habits leading to dangerous weight gains,'' said Sheikha Fatima in her opening speech read on her behalf by Reem Abdullah Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.
H.H. also highlighted that the council is sponsoring conferences, seminars and lectures to increase awareness among women about the dangers of a number of diseases, including cancer, cardiac disease, cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, along with other chronic diseases.
Moreover, she pointed to efforts by the council to eliminate these diseases through increased medical education among citizens, along with learning about the importance of performing physical exercise.
Sheikha Fatima affirmed that the General Women Union is deeply interested in women's health and supporting them to eliminate these diseases. She stated that during the last two decades, many diseases have been discovered, causing a reassessment of how treatment is being provided. She encouraged all women to have regular cancer and cardiac-disease checkups, noting that many health centers and clinics for mothers have been opened.
Furthermore, she said that women occupy many important positions in the health and nursing fields, and have become qualified in treating their fellow women.
At the end of her speech, Sheikha Fatima pointed to the importance of participation of all sectors in society in this campaign.
In attendance at the opening of the campaign were Staff Pilot Major General Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National and Reserve Service Authority, Shamma bint Sohail Faris AlMazrui, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, along with several officials in the Ministries of Health and Education.
Also, Lt. Colonel Dr Moza Al Shehi delivered a speech at the opening of the campaign, in which she spoke about unprecedented numbers in many countries, and in the UAE, suffering from weight gains, along with its consequences. She stated that 66 per cent of UAE citizens suffer from being obese, and that the state spent some US$ 6 billion in the treatment of these diseases.
Representatives from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, The Eastern Mediterranean Regional office of the World Health organisation, Sports Councils in Abu Dhabi and Dubai also spoke at the event.
