Sheikha Fatima wins ITU Personal Leadership Award 2016

ABU DHABI, 5th December, 2016 (WAM) -- The International Telecommunication Union, ITU, presented the Personal Leadership Award 2016 to H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for achieving gender equality in the field of telecommunication and information technology on a par with the global level.

On behalf of Sheikha Fatima, H.H. Sheikh Dhiyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Board of Trustees of Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, received the award from Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of ITU, during the ceremony held on Monday at the headquarters of the GWU in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of Noura Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GWU, and Reem Abdullah Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and childhood.

"This valuable international award is seen as a medal for women in the UAE because it embodies the prestigious positions being occupied by Emirati women at regional the international levels, thanks to the support of the leadership that empowered women to harness all opportunities and play a greater role in the development process," Al Falasi said as she thanked the ITU on behalf of Sheikha Fatima.

This award is a strong incentive for the UAE national women to innovate and score greater achievements not only in technology, but also in all fields, she added.

"Sheikha Fatima is a pioneer in women’s empowerment in the UAE, and we appreciate her efforts and activities to empower women in the area of modern technology," Zhao said.

He explained that the award focusses on the application of technology to empower women and encourage them to work in the technology sector.

Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, Director-General of Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, also expressed his pride in Sheikha Fatima’s achievement. The move reflects appreciation of the UAE’s efforts to support women, he added.

Sheikh Dhiyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed and Houlin Zhao, accompanied by Noura Al Suwaidi and Reem Al Falasi, toured the GWU’s Jawhara Hall that showcases hundreds of awards won by Sheikha Fatima, GWU and the Centre for Heritage and Environmental industries.
