ABU DHABI, 5th December, 2016 (WAM)--Under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the 22nd Congress of International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions, INTOSAI, began on Monday in Abu Dhabi.

Hosted by the State Audit Institution (SAI), the congress aims to promote the professional status of the state in the area of financial control and the fight against corruption in the public sector.

Dr. Harib bin Saeed Al Amimi, President of SAI, First Vice Chairman of INTOSAI Governing Board - Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee of the Congress, said in a statement to the media, on the sidelines of the congress, that the most important outcome of this international gathering is the UAE's assumption of the presidency of INTOSAI, represented by SAI from December.

He noted that the presidency of the UAE to the organisation is a testimony from the international community and regulators about the SAI's efficiency and financial control.

Dr. Al Amimi added the international initiative and strategy, led by the SAI in collaboration with the United Nations and the Alliance of audit bureaus of a number of friendly countries to establish a joint working group to develop an appropriate mechanism to check and review the implementation of the development goals of the United Nations 2030, was also behind the decision.

This year's congress provides an opportunity for several crucial developments to be discussed and for the INTOSAI community to reflect and decide on the way forward. INTOSAI will present its next strategic plan to the Congress.

The strategic plan will be presented alongside updated statutes of the organisation. It is an inclusive process that involved deliberations with external stakeholders.
