WASHINGTON, 11th January, 2016 (WAM) — White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough has confirmed that US President Barack Obama will close the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility before his presidency ends in 11 months.

In a statement, McDonough said that President Obama feels an obligation to his successor to close the facility so that the new administration doesn’t face the same challenges his did.

However, the official declined to respond to whether Obama will use his executive powers and surpass the US Congress to close the facility.

Obama has promised since the start of his presidency seven years ago that he would close the facility, arguing that the camp has outlived its usefulness and is too costly to maintain.
