Yuriko Koike elected Governor of Tokyo, First Woman in Post

TOKYO, 31st July, 2016 (WAM) -- Japan's Former Defence Minister Yuriko Koike on Sunday was elected governor of Tokyo, becoming the first woman in the post and taking the helm four years before the city plays host to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Koike, 64 years old, is a member of parliament from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
