CLEVELAND CLINIC ABU DHABI ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONE WITH TOPPING-OFF OF NEW CANCER CENTER BUILDING

State-of-the-art facility set to transform cancer patients’ journeys in the UAE and the region

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a Mubadala Health partner, today completed the exterior construction of its new Cancer Center in the UAE capital.

The final glass panel was fitted to the tenth floor of the facility during a topping-off ceremony attended by the Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Deputy Group CEO of Mubadala Investment Company, Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi; Mubadala Health CEO, Hasan Jasem Al Nowais; and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi CEO, Dr. Jorge Guzman.

At the ceremony, which was also attended by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi caregivers, the final glass panel was signed and inscribed with personal messages.

Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi said: “The completion of the Cancer Center’s exterior structure represents a major milestone in the construction process and brings us one step closer to start serving patients later this year. There is an immense sense of pride and gratitude for all those who have contributed to the project and enabled us to reach this stage. When it opens, the Center will provide the highest standards of specialized oncological screening, diagnostics and treatments, ensuring that cancer patients have access to the best and most comprehensive care in the UAE and the region.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Guzman expressed his gratitude to the caregivers at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, contractors and suppliers, partners at Mubadala Investment Company, Mubadala Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He also thanked current patients and their families who played a vital role in designing the optimal patient care journey at the new Center by sharing their invaluable insights.

The new 19,000 square meter center is scheduled to begin receiving patients later this year, providing world-class level of care throughout each cancer patient’s journey. Modeled on Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Center, which is ranked number five for cancer care in the United States, the Abu Dhabi-based Cancer Center is set to bring an integrated and transformative approach to diagnosing and treating the disease in the UAE and the region. Cancer is the third most common cause of death in the UAE and the primary reason patients travel overseas. The new Center will help eliminate the need for patients to travel abroad for the necessary treatment and care.

The Center will have 24 exam rooms, 24 infusion rooms, two procedure rooms, and an area devoted to women’s oncology services. The facility will apply a “patient and family-centered” approach to care, which is already well-established in Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Oncology Institute. The Institute established a Patient and Family Advisory Council, which includes cancer patients, those in remission, and patients’ family members, all who provide ongoing feedback on how to enhance the delivery of cancer treatments. Insights from the Council have been incorporated into the new Cancer Center’s design to optimize the services and care patients will receive once it opens.

MoHAP signs MoU to improve access to affordably priced innovative medications

DUBAI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, and Axios, a global healthcare consulting firm, recently signed an appendix to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand the scope of the “Hand in Hand” initiative.

The initiative aims to provide affordable medicines to uninsured and low-income expat patients or those whose insurance is not covering the cost of treatment of the following diseases; pulmonary arterial hypertension, multiple myeloma, active ulcerative colitis, and psoriatic arthritis.

The MoU was first signed in December 2018, and about 712 eligible patients benefited from it. In April 2019, an extension of the program was signed to provide new medication to patients with the aforementioned conditions.

The agreement is part of the ministry’s, Janssen’s, and Axios’s commitment to improving access to innovative drugs, especially for low-income expat patients who can’t afford the costs of their treatment.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Amin Hussein Al-Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Health Regulation Sector, MoHAP, Jamie Phares, Managing Director, the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, and Anas Al-Safarini, Senior Director, MENA, Axios International.

The agreement was signed at the US pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai, in the presence of the US Consul General Meghan Gregonis and the accompanying delegation along with a number of officials from Janssen and Axios Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri said: “MoHAP is committed to providing the best medicines for all low-income expat patients in the country. In this context, we launched the “Hand in Hand” initiative in cooperation with Jansen and Axios International in 2018, and we are currently working on expanding the scope of this initiative to support and enhance patients’ access to innovative medicines. The initiative targets low-income expat patients whose insurance doesn’t cover the total cost of treatment to improve their adherence to the treatment plan prescribed by their attending physician. The initiative also covers eligible low-income non-Emirati patients who are uninsured, underinsured, and financially distressed patients.”

“The initiative covers low-income, non-Emirati patients with partial or no insurance coverage and aims to provide them with specific health conditions with necessary medications, including pulmonary arterial hypertension, multiple myeloma, active ulcerative colitis, and psoriatic arthritis,” added Al Amiri.

He underscored that the ministry is committed to cooperating with companies and institutions to improve the quality of life of patients, services and treatments for various health conditions.

“This is part of MoHAP’s strategy to provide an integrated healthcare system for our patients and community members in accordance with the highest international standards,” noted Al Amiri.

For his part, the US Consul General said: “The ‘Hand in Hand’ MoU that we celebrate today is a perfect example of public-private partnership and shared commitment to patients and will help provide a better access to innovative medicines, something which would ensure a better life for so many patients and their family members.

Jamie Phares said, “The MoU is part of our cooperation with MoHAP and Axios to develop low-income, non-Emirati patient support programs in the UAE. As part of this constructive cooperation, we facilitate access to our innovative and affordable medicines for low-income non-Emirati patients and the health system at large. We are committed to providing faster and more equitable access to medicines, which is part of our commitment to providing our medicines to patients at an affordable cost.

She added, “We work closely with patients and health care providers to support the efforts of the health system in the UAE. Such kind of cooperation is natural for us as we work all over the world to fight diseases with science, while improving accessibility to innovative medicines,”.

Expressing his appreciation for the initiative, Anas Al-Safarini said: “The ‘Hand in Hand’ initiative supports patients and meets their aspirations when it comes to providing necessary and improved access to innovative drugs, reflecting our commitment at Axios to support the efforts of MoHAP and Janssen to provide medicines to patients.”

The initiative covers drug support plans, based on the assessment of non-Emirati patients who are uninsured or those whose medical insurance doesn’t cover the cost of the treatment. The initiative also includes sharing the cost with patients or the supporting body according to their ability to bear the costs of the treatment.
