MoHAP launches national breast cancer awareness campaign

ABU DHABI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has launched a national breast cancer awareness campaign to highlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer and prevention methods.

Held under the slogan “Screen and Reassure Us”, the campaign was launched in collaboration with the Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) represented by the Pink Caravan and MSD International to mark International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in October, according to the World Health Organisation.

As part of the national campaign, a “mammogram” device will be deployed to detect breast cancer in women aged forty and older, particularly those who have not had the test in more than two years.

Clinical exams and mammography will be performed as part of the initiative, in accordance with international standards and guidelines and under the supervision of a qualified medical professional. Additionally, the campaign will foster collaboration and teamwork across all governmental and non-governmental health entities to support MoHAP’s efforts in the fight against breast cancer.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector, highlighted the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in realising the objectives of the National Guidelines for Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis. “The campaign aims to promote healthy lifestyles based on innovative and sustainable methods that ensure the protection of society from diseases; thus, improving the outcomes of the national index to lower cancer mortality rates,” he said.

Al Rand stressed that although 80 percent of breast tumors are benign and non-cancerous, early detection and treatment of breast cancer increases the survival rate to more than 95 percent. He invited all members and organisations in the country to engage in the initiative and help battle breast cancer on a large scale by promoting early detection and diagnosis, lauding the directives of the wife of the Ruler of Sharjah H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA).

For her part, Dr. Buthaina Abdullah bin Balila, Head of the Non-Communicable Disease Department, clarified that the annual breast cancer awareness campaign taking place in October includes a package of awareness initiatives that will be implemented in various governmental bodies to promote early diagnosis and detection of breast cancer.

Bin Balila underscored that the campaign is primarily meant to educate community members about disease detection and diagnosis as well as the procedures to follow when symptoms appear in order to build a society that is aware of the dangers of this disease and how to prevent it. “Through this campaign, we look forward to increasing breast cancer early detection and diagnosis to provide patients with comprehensive care,” she said, adding that the Pink Caravan services have been provided around the country.

MoHAP discusses ways to improve mental health of school students

ABU DHABI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has organised a training workshop on school student’s mental health in cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and various health and educational bodies and authorities in the country.

Themed “Training of Trainers on Mental Health of School Students,” the workshop targeted nursing staff, teachers, psychologists, and social workers and discussed global strategies designed to promote mental health among students.

The gathering was attended by Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector; Dr. Nada Al Marzouqi, Director of the Public Health and Prevention Department; Dr. Suad Al Awar, Head of the Family Health Department at the Ministry; Khalil Al Hosani, from Emirates School Establishment; and Dr. Hisham Hammouda and Dr. Iman Jaber, from the World Health Organisation.

The event aimed to enhance trainers skills to spot psychological and behavioral problems among school students in order to early detect cases that need extra attention and care and provide necessary interventions. Additionally, it sought to educate the target audience on methods for enhancing kids’ behavioral abilities and mental health as well as how to properly counsel and assist them in order to enhance mental health in the classroom.

The workshop also included a set of lectures that shed light on global and regional programs designed to promote school mental health, and highlight the impact of mental health on childhood development.

DoH launches first edition of healthcare grant to foster research and innovation

ABU DHABI, In line with its efforts to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading destination for life sciences, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) launched the first edition of the Healthcare Research and Innovation Grant, a monetary fund that fosters research and innovation efforts among healthcare professionals across Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector.

 

The Grant seeks to fuel healthy competition across the healthcare ecosystem in the emirate as well as birth unique research projects and innovative products, technologies and services in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare facilities.

 

Cementing the Department’s vision in curating a world-class healthcare ecosystem, DoH launched the Grant to further encourage a culture of research and innovation among healthcare providers and innovators and increase clinical research and Intellectual Property (IP) generation in Abu Dhabi. The Grant will support researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs from Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector to solve critical challenges across two main dimensions covering five topics – research in Cardio-metabolic and Vascular Disorders, Cancer, Alzheimer Disease, Rare Diseases, Emerging Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance, as well as innovations focusing on Smart Hospitals and Prevention and Management of Chronic Diseases.

 

The Grant will support researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs along with healthcare facilities that seek to make an everlasting impact in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector. Applicants must partner with a healthcare facility in Abu Dhabi to finalise and submit their entry.

 

Headed by Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director, Research and Innovation Centre at DoH, Abu Dhabi Health Research & Technology Committee complemented by additional experts will evaluate and assess submissions.

 

Commenting on the Grant, Dr. Al Mannaei said, “Abu Dhabi’s wise leadership has long recognised the pivotal role of research and innovation across all sectors – more importantly in healthcare to drive better outcomes while improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the healthcare system. As part of DoH’s efforts to reiterate the capital’s position as a leading destination for life sciences and innovation, we are committed to enabling and empowering innovators and researchers within our community to take their passion projects to the next stage. With Abu Dhabi providing the right environment for individuals and companies to thrive, we are thrilled to put forward this Grant that will expand clinical research capabilities in the emirate as well as conceptualise unique project in the Capital.”

 

Al Mannaei added, “We look forward to receiving and reading through all entries as well as providing guidance to all applicants. This is an exciting milestone for the healthcare sector that will spread a fine share of healthy competition among science and technology fanatics.”

 

The Healthcare Research and Innovation Grant is led by DoH in collaboration with Abu Dhabi’s Healthcare Sector and further government and non-government partners in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Applicants can submit their entries on www.doh.gov.ae for a period of six weeks. The Grant will provide awardees financial support for clinical research projects, as well as proof of concept projects for innovative new technologies and services. DoH will also support the winners with guidance to ensure project continuity and sustainability.

UAE announces 342 new COVID-19 cases, 323 recoveries,1 death in last 24 hours

ABU DHABI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced that it conducted 218,610 additional COVID-19 tests over the past 24 hours, using state-of-the-art medical testing equipment.

 

In a statement, the Ministry stressed its aim to continue expanding the scope of testing nationwide to facilitate the early detection of coronavirus cases and carry out the necessary treatment. As part of its intensified testing campaign, MoHAP announced 342 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the UAE to 1,025,910.

 

According to the Ministry, the infected individuals are from various nationalities, are in a stable condition, and receiving the necessary care.

 

MoHAP also announced 1 death due to COVID-19 complications, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 2,344.

 

The Ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and wished COVID-19 patients a speedy and full recovery. It called on all members of the society to cooperate with health authorities, adhere to the instructions and physical distance to ensure the health and safety of all.

 

MoHAP also noted that an additional 323 individuals had fully recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,005,266.

UAE announces 355 new COVID-19 cases, 362 recoveries, no deaths in last 24 hours

ABU DHABI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced that it conducted 206,017 additional COVID-19 tests over the past 24 hours, using state-of-the-art medical testing equipment.

 

In a statement, the Ministry stressed its aim to continue expanding the scope of testing nationwide to facilitate the early detection of coronavirus cases and carry out the necessary treatment. As part of its intensified testing campaign, MoHAP announced 355 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the UAE to 1,025,568.

 

According to the Ministry, the infected individuals are from various nationalities, are in a stable condition, and receiving the necessary care.

 

The Ministry added that no COVID-19-related deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 2,343.

 

MoHAP also noted that an additional 362 individuals had fully recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,004,943.
