ADGM Arbitration Centre and TAHKEEM sign agreement to advance use of commercial arbitration and mediation

ABU DHABI, The Abu Dhabi Global Market Arbitration Centre (ADGMAC) has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Sharjah International Commercial Arbitration Centre (TAHKEEM) with the objective of promoting the use of commercial arbitration and mediation across the UAE and wider region.

As per the agreement, which was signed by Linda Fitz-Alan, Registrar and Chief Executive of ADGM Courts, and Ahmed Saleh Al Echla, Director of TAHKEEM, the two sides will work together to enhance the accessibility, efficiency and effectiveness of commercial arbitration and mediation by collaborating on key activities, sharing knowledge and facilitating educational opportunities in areas of mutual interest. They will also support each other with the provision of hearing and meeting room facilities to conduct arbitrations and mediations.

Linda Fitz-Alan, Registrar and Chief Executive of ADGM Courts, said: “Both ADGMAC and TAHKEEM share the view that the use of commercial arbitration and mediation, through fair and expeditious procedures, provides confidence and stability to the international business community. I am confident that this agreement will help to further advance the UAE’s reputation as a leader in dispute resolution.”

Equal distribution of COVID vaccines ‘new test’ for human conscience: Higher Committee of Human Fraternity

ABU DHABI, The whole world without exception has suffered from the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exposed all people to the pain of losing loved ones, relatives, and friends, the Secretary-General of Higher Committee of Human Fraternity (HCHF), Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, said.

He made the remarks while participating in Global Citizen’s VAX LIVE concert on Sunday alongside world leaders including US President Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and other world leaders, intellectuals, activists, and artists supporting global COVID-19 vaccine equity.

In his speech during the concert, he added that the development by scientists and researchers of COVID-19 vaccines has given hope to the entire world for an imminent end to the COVID-19 tragedy and he added that humanity is now experiencing a new ethical challenge and test to human conscience: unequal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. He also urged all of humanity to overcome discrimination, racism, materialistic and individualistic tendencies.

Judge Abdelsalam called for collaboration to ensure the fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines among all countries and peoples, as well as the elimination of all obstacles that obstruct vaccine access for poor and remote areas, refugees, and displaced persons who cannot afford the cost of the vaccines.

Federal Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Prosecution imprisons two young men for violating COVID-19 measures

ABU DHABI, The Federal Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Prosecution has ordered the imprisonment of two young men for violating the precautionary measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

The authority stated that, under the framework of the national efforts aimed at combating the coronavirus pandemic and limiting its spread, the Abu Dhabi Police monitored a video of two young men entering a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi, who filmed themselves without wearing face masks, adding that they were also wearing smart tracking watches used for those in quarantine, therefore, violating the precautionary measures in a boastful manner.

”Legal action was immediately taken against the two men, who were imprisoned pending an investigation, the Federal Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Prosecution said in a statement.

The authority also urged the public to adhere to relevant precautionary measures, laws and regulations to avoid being subject to legal actions.

UAE ranked among top 20 in 16 competitiveness indexes related to entrepreneurship

ABU DHABI, Reports from 5 specialised global institutions revealed that the UAE is among the 20 leading countries in 13 global competitiveness indexes related to entrepreneurship in 2020, a testament to the UAE’s forward-looking policies on entrepreneurship.

According to the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), the UAE’s international successes included top rankings in the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, the Global Competitiveness Report 4.0, the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking and the Doing Business 2020 Report.

The reports show the UAE’s success in providing the best legislative and procedural frameworks to drive entrepreneurship in the country, be it in business agility, the availability of investment capital or the conducive climate for establishing SMEs, surpassing several leading global economies, including the US, Canada, UK, China, Japan and many others.

The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, issued by the International Institute for Administrative Development, ranked the UAE second in entrepreneurship, while it came in fourth in the venture capital availability index and fifth in the growth of innovative companies index of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report.

The UAE ranked sixth globally in indexes related to business agility, venture capital and investment capital, according to the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking.

The UAE also claimed sixth place in the attitudes towards entrepreneurial risk index and eighth place in the time required to start a business index of the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, while ranking ninth in the SMEs and the capital cost indexes, tenth in the corporate debt index, and eleventh in the total early-stage entrepreneurial activity index.

The UAE’s incredible track record in entrepreneurship over the past year has helped make it among the world’s most pioneering countries in the sector, empowered by an attractive and integrated legislative system and innovative initiatives and programmes that encourage entrepreneurial projects and accelerate their growth, making them a major contributor to the UAE’s non-oil GDP.

ADAFSA verifies safety of 1.12 million tonnes of food materials in 2020

ABU DHABI, The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) verified the safety of 1.12 million tonnes of various food materials and approved their entry into Abu Dhabi’s markets in 2020, after confirming their compliance with relevant food safety requirements and standards.

These efforts are part of ADAFSA’s commitment to maintain the flow of food imports into the emirate’s markets through land border crossings, seaports and airports.

All shipments of food products entering Abu Dhabi are subject to strict inspection procedures to ensure their safety, such as surface testing and appropriate laboratory tests, to guarantee their compliance to approved standards and specifications.

These procedures are easily implemented and aim to maintain the stability of food supplies and the highest levels of food safety.

The ADAFSA’s 2020 statistical report highlighted that entries though land border crossings accounted for 63 percent of approved food material imports, or some 705,600 tonnes, while approved food materials entering through seaports accounted for 35 percent, making up some 392,800 tonnes, and those entering through airports accounted for nearly 2 percent, or some 19,800 tonnes.

The number of food shipments that entered through Abu Dhabi’s ports was 57,657, including 45,294 shipments via land border crossings, most notably at the Ghuwaifat Gate. The number of shipments entering through airports totalled 8,299, accounting for 14 percent, while food shipments entering via seaports accounted for 7 percent of all shipments.
