Abu Dhabi Judicial Department starts using machine learning for speedy trial of criminal cases

ABU DHABI, The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has developed a smart programme to follow up cases in the criminal courts, using machine learning – a type of artificial intelligence, to increase the adjudication rate and enable speedy trial of criminal cases.

The Department is updating the programme to enable electronic judgments in criminal cases that have been settled by conciliation or waiver, and cases affected by the statute of limitations.

Counsellor Youssef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, stressed that employing artificial intelligence tools to follow up all the work of the criminal courts is a paradigm shift in the judicial system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in line with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court and Head of the Judicial Department in Abu Dhabi, to develop smart and innovative future courts that provide world-class services.

Al Abri indicated that this step aligns with the digital transformation of judicial and legal services as part of the application of the remote litigation system and implementation of the strategic plan of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department 2021-2023, which focuses on providing the best services in the world.

For his part, Counsellor Mansour Al Marzouqi, President of the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court, explained that the uses of machine learning in the criminal courts facilitate the immediate follow-up of all the work of the judicial divisions as the programme offers accurate statistics of the completed cases, the ongoing cases, the follow-up of those in custody in pending cases, adjudication rate, and adjourned cases. This helps to take urgent steps to expedite cases and adjudicate them in accordance with the procedures established by law.

He added that the programme also allows the possibility of pronouncing the judgment, whether in the presence or in absentia in electronic form, while giving access to substantial data for the draft judgment, such as the names of the accused, the articles of the penal code related to the charges, and a description of the charges against the accused.

He pointed out that work is underway to update the system to accommodate more procedures in criminal cases, including the issuance of judgments electronically in criminal cases settled by conciliation or waiver, as soon as the waiver or conciliation is proven in cases that includes assault, verbal abuse, and destruction, as well as criminal cases affected by the statute of limitations.
