Low-birth-weight control panels project kicks off

ABU DHABI, The Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO), in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), announced, on Tuesday, the launch of a project for low-birth-weight control panels, to curb diseases threatening the health of newborns in Abu Dhabi.

The ZHO launched an online platform to register newborns with low birth weight. This is a proactive step in its efforts to mitigate drawbacks or potential disabilities that affect the child.

The ZHO coordinated with ECA by displaying weights and rates of low weight, less than 2,500 grammes. It also contacted the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) to obtain weights to be divided according to the levels clarified by the ECA, and to start creating panels on the platform and linking them with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, to be coordinated with the developer of the smart application to develop the system.

The platform is divided into the levels of control screens for normal birth weight, low birth weight, very low birth weight, and finally extremely low birth weight.

The launch of the system for the panels, which took place virtually, was attended by Abdulla Abdulalee Al Humaidan, ZHO’s Secretary-General, Sanaa Mohammad Suhail, ECA’s Director-General, Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, Executive Director of Community Health at ADPHC, and a host of leaders and representatives of the concerned bodies from the ZHO, ECA and ADPHC.

The ZHO Secretary-General praised the cooperation between the ZHO and the ECA in projects and initiatives, among which are supporting efforts to care for the autistic group category through the project of distributing sensory units in public places. This will achieve Abu Dhabi’s to provide a decent life for our children of determination, especially the autistic group.

He extended his thanks and gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Crown Prince Court and ECA Chairman, for supporting initiatives and projects for the people of determination’s early childhood.

This project will enable the competent authorities to provide high-quality services in diagnosis, early intervention and proactive planning to determine the necessary interventions to preserve the child’s health. According to the ECA, data on health problems facing low-birth-weight children, shows they are seven times more likely to suffer from neurological and psychological diseases than their peers. These children are more likely to develop cerebral palsy, epilepsy, mental disabilities and speech and language disorders.

The Director-General of ECA acknowledged the DoH’s invaluable efforts in supporting the ECA to track the health conditions of nearly 7,600 newborns who were born in 2016, all the way to December 2020, as well as collecting, aggregating and analysing every medical condition experienced by these newborns.

Dr. Al Hajeri said, “The low-weight baby control panel project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s health sector strategy to provide world-class healthcare to the community while ensuring a digital approach to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.”
