Union Association for Human Rights emphasises importance of UAE’s efforts to combat terrorism, promote global peace

GENEVA: The Union Association for Human Rights (UAHR) highlighted the efforts being made by the UAE to combat terrorism and dry up its sources globally, noting to the UAE’s contributions to promoting world peace and enshrining international commitment to human rights.

This came in two oral statements delivered by the UAHR in cooperation with the Arab-European Forum for Dialogue and Human Rights, during the General Debate of the Agenda Item 4 of the 55th High-Level Session of the UN Human Rights Council, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, entitled “Human rights situations that require the attention of the Council.”

In the first oral statement presented to the Human Rights Council, Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, President of the UAHR, stressed the importance of the UAE’s efforts to combat terrorism and dry up its sources of support and financing and the commitment and cooperation of states to implement the International Counter-terrorism Partnership Agreement, noting that terrorist threats pose a major c
hallenge to human rights at the global level and pose a serious threat to international security and peace, as they contribute to threatening human security, depriving civilians from enjoying their basic rights, and killing the innocent.

In addition, she added, they increase violations and deprivation of basic rights, especially the right to life, freedom of movement and personal safety.

Dr. Al Kaabi urged the Human Rights Council to strengthen its efforts and activate its mechanisms to ensure international protection from terrorist acts and activities around the world, explaining that the risks and threats posed by terrorism to human security are constantly increasing, despite the great efforts made by the United Nations, the UN Security Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the formation of an international committee to counter terrorism, and the adoption of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy by the United Nations General Assembly.

For her part, Mariam Al Ahmadi, Vice Presiden
t of the UAHR, highlighted in the second statement before the Human Rights Council the efforts made by the UAE to spread world peace and enshrine the international commitment to human rights.

Al Ahmadi emphasised the importance and effective role of the Human Rights Council and its legal and moral responsibility to protect the lives of civilians, especially women and children who pay the high price of conflicts in their countries, especially in light of weak opportunities for a decent living and the fragility of health, education, economic and development systems.
